The dog days of summer may come and go for most of the world but, as most South Florida residents know, the season of heat and humidity is far from over. It’s as important to stay cool and hydrated year-round as it is during those summer months. However, there’s another family member you need to keep an eye on: your dog. Just like you, dogs can get overheated and suffer from dehydration and sunburns. Check out our tips below so you can keep Rover from burning up all over when out on walks.
Walk On The Dark Side Take your pooch on a walk around the block early in the day or late at night when temperatures tend to be cooler. Be sure to invest in some reflectors or lighted dog accessories to make yourself and your dog more visible on your walks. When venturing out for a mid-afternoon stroll, keep to the shady side of the street not only to beat the heat, but also to save those paws from being burnt by the hot asphalt.
Leave Rover At Home During the height of the day, car temperatures can soar above 100° in as little as 10 minutes. Even mild temperatures can turn your car into a deathtrap during an extended period of a time. We know Fido loves car rides, but on days when the forecast is sunny and bright, we recommend leaving your furry friend at home
Water, Water, Water Although a dog’s normal body temperature can range from 110-120°, they are much less efficient at cooling themselves than us humans. With sweat glands only on their nose and paw pads, dogs rely on panting and water to regulate their temperature. Help your best friend stay cool by keeping an eye on the water level of their bowl. You might even invest in a special cold water bowl and/or extra bowls to keep around the house for easy access.
Throw Some Shade One of the best things about South Florida is our yearlong gorgeous weather, and we definitely think you and your four-legged BFF should be enjoying it. If you plan on spending some extended time outdoors, be sure there’s shade to protect you both from the sun. Prevent your hound dog from becoming a hot dog by setting up a shaded outdoor bed in your back yard or throwing an extra umbrella in your trunk before you head to the beach.
Splish Splash A quick YouTube search of “dog kiddie pool” yields over 500,000 results of dogs enjoying their own private splash zone. An ideal doggie oasis, kiddie pools can run as little as $5.88 and keep your pup cool for hours.
